Four services, and how to choose the one that pays first

Most Burlington small businesses should start with one service, not four. This page explains what each one does, who it suits and the order we usually recommend.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

The right first service is the one that fixes your biggest leak. For most independent Burlington businesses that is the Google listing, because it is free, it is what nearby customers see first, and it is often half finished. After that, the order depends on your numbers, and we explain it below.

This is the starting point for almost every business with a local customer base. When someone in Headon Forest or Roseland searches "physio near me" or "birthday cakes Burlington", the map results usually appear before any website. If your profile has the wrong hours, a vague category or no recent photos, you lose that customer before they ever see your site.

Choose it first if: customers mostly come from within a short drive, you have a storefront or a defined service area, and your profile hasn't had a serious tidy-up in the past year.

Read the full scope on the local search service page.

Small-business websites

Your website has one job: to answer the questions people ask before they visit or call. What do you sell, what does it cost roughly, where are you, when are you open, and how do I reach you? A surprising number of Burlington business sites bury at least one of those answers, or load so slowly on a phone that people give up.

Choose it first if: your site is more than a few years old, doesn't show prices or hours clearly, or you are sending paid traffic to it and seeing few enquiries.

See what is included on the websites service page.

Ads buy you a place at the top of the results immediately, which is useful for a new business, a new location or a product with a short season. They also spend money every day, so they need a ceiling worked out from your own margins.

Choose it when: your listing and website are already in decent shape, you know what a customer is worth, and you have a clear product or service people search for by name. We usually recommend a short, capped test before any longer commitment.

The method is set out on the Google Ads service page.

Reviews and repeat-customer marketing

For a local business, the cheapest new sale is often an old customer coming back, and the most convincing advertising is a stranger's honest review. This service builds a simple, repeatable routine: when to ask for a review, how to reply to the ones you get, and how to stay in touch with past customers in a way they actually welcome.

Choose it alongside local search if you have plenty of happy customers but very few reviews, or if most of your sales come from first-time visitors who never return.

Details are on the reviews and repeat business page.

The order we usually recommend

There is no single order for every business, but this sequence suits most Burlington owners we speak with:

  1. Fix the listing. Hours, categories, photos, services and description. Weeks, not months.
  2. Fix the obvious website gaps. Hours, prices or price ranges, location, a working phone number at the top.
  3. Start the review habit. One ask per happy customer, every week, for good.
  4. Test ads only if the numbers support it. A capped trial on your most profitable service or product.

Skipping straight to step four is the most expensive mistake we see. Ads send people to whatever you already have, so a weak listing or a confusing site turns paid clicks into wasted money.

What we don't do

We are a marketing and consulting service. We don't do the work your business does, whether that is cutting hair, fixing furnaces or filing tax returns, and we don't sell your customers' details to anyone. We also don't print flyers, run events or design store signage, though we're happy to talk through how those fit with what you do online.

If you are a contractor, our sister site Burlington.Marketing is written specifically for trades. Everyone else is in the right place.

Next step

If you aren't sure which service fits, start with the guides, check the plans and prices, or simply call, text or email and describe your business in a few lines. We will tell you which one to start with, and whether you need us at all.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy all four services?

No. Many owners start with one, usually local search, and add another only when the first is working and measured. A plan that bundles everything on day one is rarely the right plan for a small business.

Do you do social media?

We advise on it and fold it into the review and repeat-customer work, because for most local businesses social posts matter most to people who already know you. We don't sell posting packages on their own.

Which service is cheapest to run?

Local search and review routines cost mostly time. Google Ads costs time plus ad spend paid to Google, which is why we only recommend ads once the numbers show they can pay for themselves.

Can I do some of this myself?

Yes, and we encourage it. Our guides explain the Google Business Profile basics and the budget maths so you can handle the simple parts and pay only for what needs a specialist.
